Understanding the cultural background of our students is important because it helps to prevent misinterpretation. For example, some students may avoid eye contact or maintain physical distance as a sign of respect in their culture. However, in the United States, these behaviors might be seen as defiance or indicators of trauma. To be better informed, educators can learn about their students’ cultural norms and how they influence behavior. Building strong relationships with students and their families can also provide valuable insights.

I completely agree with your point. I once worked with a student who always stood very close to others. Since he was new, I assumed this was because he felt anxious or stressed. When I met his mother, I noticed she also stood very close to me while we spoke. The student wasn’t in my class for long, so I never had the chance to fully understand whether this was cultural or simply part of his upbringing. Without considering different perspectives, it can be very easy to misinterpret behavior.
